Manual Motor Protectors vs. Fuses: Which is Best?

There are pros and cons to both Manual Motor Protectors and Fuses, and what works best will depend on your application.

Manual Motor Protectors can be convenient because it is easy to see when they have been tripped and they are simple to reset, unlike fuses which will require replacement. This can make MMPs a less expensive long-term option if you find yourself often replacing fuses. MMPs are often more compact than comparable fuse solutions, which you may want to consider if you are working with a crowded control panel.

However, fuses still have advantages of their own. There is a chance that MMPs may not switch off quickly enough for the needs of your application. MMPs also typically have a lower short circuit current rating compared to fuses. If you are trying to meet UL certification standards, it is typically easier to do so with fuses, because as long as you meet the manufacturer’s recommended fuse size and type, you should be good to go. Comparatively, manufacturers need to test and certify individual MMPs to guarantee compatibility. Fuses are universally compatible and can be used in any application, whereas depending on input voltage, motor drives larger than 15-30HP simply may not work with an MMP.

For general or mid-large sized applications, fuses may be the better choice. But if you are working with smaller-sized motors, it may be worth considering the benefits of manual motor protectors.
